Η λέξη της εβδομάδας: Ιταλία

Τι σημαίνει η λέξη "Ιταλία";

Ο πληθυσμός της γείτονος χώρας είναι 58.462.375 (απογρ. 2005). Έγινε ανεξάρτητο και ενιαίο κράτος το 1861 (τριάντα χρόνια μετά από εμάς). Από το δημοτικό σχολείο μαθαίνουμε για την κοινή πορεία που ενώνει τους δύο λαούς, αν και για την αρχαιότητα δεν μπορούμε να μιλήσουμε για μία ξεχωριστή χώρα αλλά για την κύρια περιοχή που ζει και μεγαλουργεί ο Ελληνισμός (Μεγάλη Ελλάδα). Οι Αρχαίοι Ελληνες, άλλωστε, ήταν οι «νονοί» της Ιταλίας. Όταν θα αποικήσουν τη χερσόνησο, θα βρουν τον ντόπιο πληθυσμό να ασχολείται αποκλειστικά με την εκτροφή των μοσχαριών. Το μοσχάρι στην ομβρική διάλεκτο ονομάζεται : vitlu < λατ. vitulus < λατ. vitalia < ελλ. Ιταλία. Οι Έλληνες θα αποκαλέσουν, μάλλον ειρωνικά, το ντόπιο πληθυσμό ως "Ιταλούς" (: γελαδάρηδες) και τη χώρα "Ιταλία" (: γη των μοσχαριών). Άλλωστε παρόμοια χρήση είχε γίνει με τη λέξη "Εύβοια" (< ευ + βους, περιοχή με πλούσια εκτροφή βοειδών). Η Ιταλία (ή "Μοσχαρία", αν προτιμάτε), αναμφισβήτητα είναι η χώρα του ωραίου και του εκλεπτυσμένου, αν και το όνομα της δεν το συνυπογράφει. Πάντως, πέρα από κάθε διάθεση αστεϊσμού, καλό είναι να τονίσουμε ότι η ετυμολογία της λέξης επιστημονικά είναι αβέβαιη. Η παραπάνω εκδοχή είναι η πιο ισχυρή. Άλλες πιθανές εικασίες είναι ότι προέρχεται από τον ήρωα Italo (o οποίος είναι μυθικό ήρωας και δεν έχει επιβεβαιωθεί, ιστορικά, η ύπαρξη του). Μία άλλη πιθανή εκδοχή είναι ότι προέρχεται από την ελληνική λέξη Αιθαλία (Αethalia), "η ομιχλώδης από τους καπνούς χώρα", λόγω των ηφαιστείων της. Από την ίδια ρίζα παράγεται ετυμολογικά και το ηφαίστειο Αίτνα.
